During a recent video call for webmasters, Google employee John Muller talked about how to choose a URL structure for AMP pages.
So, one of the representatives of a web company asked Mueller if Google prefers a certain type of URL structure when it comes to AMP.
According to Mueller, the only thing that interests Google is that all URLs are located within the same domain.
“From Google’s point of view, the only criterion that is crucial for AMP pages is whether they are in the same domain. So if these URLs are contained in a subdomain or subdirectory, then everything is fine, ”Muller said.
As for the choice of a specific structure, here Muller advises to look at what works best for the current settings.
The URL structure should meet the following criteria:
- Easy to track;
- Easy to control;
- Easy to maintain;
- Compatible with CMS;
- Server Compatibility
As for some special optimization techniques for AMP URLs, there are none.
The only thing site owners should keep in mind is that the URL structure cannot be changed too often. But this rule applies to all URLs, not just AMP.
Ideally, you need to choose one option and stick to it as long as possible.
If you change the structure of Google, you need to re-process all the URLs, which can negatively affect the ranking.
“Select a subdomain, subdirectory, or options if you want. Any option that works best for you. And try to keep this setting - ideally, for a long period. "
